Plugins and formats

We can supply virtual tours in many different formats, depending on your requirements and the needs of your audience. If you’re not certain which format is the best for you, then we are happy to help you decide on the ideal solution.

Below is a list of the different mainstream formats in which we supply virtual tours. Each has a link to a demo of a virtual tour, so you can assess how tours work in different formats and with different plugins.

Macromedia Flash Player
Flash is an exciting development for virtual tours due to its high levels of accessibility. Over 95% of all users have the Flash plugin installed, so it’s easy for users to view your tours. Tours can now be viewed at a larger size, with greater detail and a smoother movement. Flash also offers great opportunities for adding multimedia content to your virtual tours. Flash is available for Windows OS and for Macintosh OS.

Adobe Shockwave

Ideal for the smooth delivery of both small and fullscreen tours, with an impressive range of interactive options. Shockwave is available for Windows OS and for Macintosh OS.

Java
Java is a good all-round applet (a small application running inside a bigger one, like a web browser) which is swift to download, and is installed on almost all PCs, as well as being accessible from mobiles and handheld devices. It’s a useful technology for virtual tours, presenting both full and small screen tours, but some older computers struggle to present tours at fullscreen through Java. Java is available for Windows OS and for Macintosh OS.

Pangea
PangeaVR can be downloaded for free and installed on all Macs. The Pangea plugin uses OpenGL and delivers full-screen panoramas with incredibly high performance. The action of moving around within a tour is exceptionally smooth using Pangea. Pangea is available for Macintosh OS.

High and Low Resolution Virtual Tours
High-resolution, full screen panoramas offer the best virtual tour viewing experience. They're ideal for a high-impact presentation of a space. The best mainstream plugin for viewing full screen is Apple QuickTime, though Flash 9 is close behind. Full screen panoramas can also be displayed in Shockwave but there is a deterioration in quality. Panoramas are typically 1 to 3 megabytes in size.

Low-resolution, small screen panoramas are ideal if a large number of tours are required. They are best viewed in Quicktime but can also be viewed in Flash, Java and shockwave. Low-resolution panoramas are typically 75 KB to 500 KB.

WC3 Web Accessibility
You have invested in the creation of a fantastic website, and are considering adding virtual tours to create exciting content for your users. However, a large percentage of users could be cut off from the experiences you have worked to achieve. People with disabilities such as dyslexia or impaired vision, learning disabilities or even a broken arm may have difficulty using the internet and reaching the content on websites. Technologies are able to assist those with disabilities in delivering internet content, but if your website is incompatible with these technologies, then they simply won’t see it. There is also a legal implication – 2 companies have already been sued for discrimination due to the lack of accessibility on their websites. Both companies settled out of court.

Eye Revolution Launches New Flash 9 Virtual Tours
Flash 9 is a fantastic plugin from Macromedia which now gives the web audience a better user experience than Flash has ever been capable of before. This means that your audience can see your virtual tour at a larger size, with greater detail and a smoother movement which is great news for clients who want the best solutions for showcasing their space. Understanding and Commissioning a Virtual Tour – a Beginner’s Guide
What is a virtual tour? A virtual tour is a complete 360-degree view of a space. The user can feel as if they’re standing within a space, and then can control their movement within the area. They can look up above them, at the floor below them, and all around. Users are also able to zoom in and out, giving them the ability to focus in on areas of interest. Each virtual tour is usually made up from a number of photographs which are ‘stitched’ together. click here to find out more
